French power grid company Reseau de Transport d'Electricite, or RTE,
Monday called on the country's local authorities to help moderate electricity
consumption, which should reach a record high later in the day or Tuesday due
to the unusually cold weather.
In a joint statement with the French mayors association, RTE, a unit of
state-controlled power behemoth Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR), said that
moderating power consumption during peak hours, around 1700 GMT-1900 GMT, was
crucial to avoid any issue.
Yet, as EDF's Chairman and Chief Executive Henri Proglio said earlier Monday,
there is no power supply issue as all available generation capacities are being
operated, but rather there could be an issue of how much power some parts of
the grid can distribute, with some regions such as Britanny and the South-East
identified as weak in that respect.
