Oil production is moving farther north, said Norway's Ministry of
Petroleum and Energy Friday, as it announced a proposal for new production
licenses in 86 blocks, 72 of them in the Barents Sea in northern Norway and 14
in the Norwegian Sea.
This proposal for blocks in the 22nd licensing round on the Norwegian
continental shelf shows that "petroleum activity is moving farther
north," said Minister of Petroleum and Energy Ola Borten Moe in a
statement.
Thirty-seven oil companies had nominated a total of 228 blocks or parts of
blocks, the ministry said. Of these 107 were nominated by two or more
companies.
The ministry asked oil companies to nominate blocks on Nov. 29, and companies
were allowed to nominate 15 blocks each in the
Norwegian
Sea
and
Barents Sea
.
The proposal will now be sent to a public hearing, with a May 11 deadline for
responses.
