Bulgaria is not threatened by power shortage despite quitting a project to build a nuclear plant and will continue exports as it produces twice as much electricity as it consumes, prime minister Boiko Borisov said.

The country's power output is 10,000 megawatts (MW), whereas domestic consumption amounts to only 5,000 MW and with the other energy projects in the pipeline production will increase even further, Borisov told bTV station on Monday.

At the end of last month Bulgaria decided to halt the construction of the Belene nuclear plant, choosing instead to add a new 1,000 MW reactor to its existing nuclear power station in Kozloduy.

If the government decides to go ahead with plans to build a new unit at the Kozloduy plant, the project will be completed in six-seven years, Borisov said.
