Iraq is targeting to export 2.9 million barrels of oil a day in 2013, up from 2.3 million barrels a day now, the country's oil minister said Wednesday.

Abdul Kareem Luaiby also said oil exports in April are expected to exceed 2.4 million barrels a day, an increase from 2.3 million barrels a day in March.

"Our oil exports should hit 2.6 million barrels a day this year but because our brothers in
Kurdistan halted their exports we haven't reached that level yet," Luaiby told reporters.

The semi-autonomous
Kurdistan region in northern Iraq halted earlier this month the export of around 90,000-100,000 barrels a day from their fields on a payment dispute with the central government in Baghdad .

The Kurdistan Regional Government had previously promised to raise exports this year to 175,000 barrels a day, the minister said at a news conference held jointly with
Russia 's OAO Lukoil Holding (LKOH.RS) at the super giant West Qurna-2 oil field near the oil-hub Basra in southern Iraq .
