The European Union said Friday that it plans to press ahead with an embargo on Iranian oil starting on July 1, after two days of talks over Tehran's controversial uranium enrichment program failed to bridge differences.

"The sanctions will go ahead on the first of July," a spokesman for the EU's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton said during a regular press briefing in
Brussels . The EU plans to introduce a total embargo on the purchase of Iranian oil in a bid to curb Iran 's nuclear ambitions.

The spokesman added: "We always keep our sanctions under review... but we would move on sanctions on deeds not words."

The West suspects
Iran 's nuclear program is aimed at developing weapons, while Iran says it is for peaceful energy purposes.

A fresh round of talks between
Iran , Russia , the U.S. , China , the U.K. and France is due to take place in Moscow on June 18-19, after a meeting in Baghdad earlier this week ended without a breakthrough to the long-running impasse.
