Toshiba Corp. (TOSYY, 6502.TO) and the disaster-hit city of Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, have agreed to build mega solar power plants for a total cost of around Y30 billion in an effort to boost reconstruction from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and ensuing nuclear disaster, the company said Wednesday, Kyodo News reported.

The large-scale solar farms will produce a total of 100,000 kilowatts of electricity, Toshiba said. It plans to start construction within the current business year through next March and to launch operations by fiscal 2014.

Toshiba and the municipal government of the coastal city, parts of which were designated as within the original no-go zone around the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant, are also considering establishing a next-generation "smart community" featuring efficient energy use, it said.

The company and municipality will call for Japanese and foreign investors to help them set up a special purpose company to build and operate the solar stations.
