Turkey
's
energy minister, Taner Yildiz, said Friday that the country continues to buy
Iranian crude but that it has reduced imports to its main refiner Tupras
(TUPRS.IS) by 20%.
However, Mr. Yildiz stressed that
Turkey
's
relations with
Iran
differ from those of
Europe
and the
U.S.
and
that his main concern was securing energy supply for his country.
The European Union, membership of which
Turkey
is in
the process of negotiating, plans a full embargo on imports of Iranian oil from
July 1 in protest at
Iran
's
nuclear program.
U.S.
sanctions include penalties that may effectively exclude financial institutions
that deal with
Iran
,
including central banks, from the
U.S.
banking system.
Friday, Mr. Yildiz said that payments were being made for Iranian crude in the
country's local currency.
