The Greek energy regulator (RAE) decided on Wednesday to stop all new permits for renewables in the region of Peloponnisos, because the local electricity grid has almost reached its limits.
The Greek energy regulator (RAE) decided on Wednesday to stop all new permits for renewables in the region of Peloponnisos, because the local electricity grid has almost reached its limits.
Peloponnisos is the southern part of Greece and in recent years has attracted many investments, especially in wind and solar projects because of its climatic profile and the generous pricing for renewable energy.
According to RAE, so far the following projects have been completed or acquired the necessary licences in Peloponnisos:
• 351,95 MW of wind farms
• 705,5 MW wind projects ready to be constructed
• 46,72 MW solar parks
• 348,43 MW solar projects ready to be contructed
• 30,02 MW small hydro
• 11,33 MW small hydro ready to be constructed
The regulator believes that the limit for renewables in that particular region is 1900 MW, therefore it has almost been reached. For that reason, no new permits will be issued until the electricity grid has been upgraded, according to the timetable set by the operator.
