Greek
utility, PPC, has asked the national regulating authority (RAE) for an average
hike of 25% in the 2013 electricity bills. Those increases will be implemented
in three different stages, starting from
1/1/2013
until
1/7/2013
.
The first
hike, in 1/1 will be 10,8%. The second one, in 1/5 will be 6,3% and the last
one, in 1/7 will be 6,1%, according to PPC’s proposal. Furthermore, an increase
for the renewable charge has been set for the 1st of January, which
translates into an even greater increase of the price of electricity for Greek
consumers.
During 2012,
the Greek government has managed to prevent any price hikes for electricity, in
order to protect the public during a period of intense economic vulnerability.
However, that will not be the case in 2013, because PPC will have to pay for
the use of coal, according to the EU’s decisions and planning. This means that
from now on, the government will attempt to protect sensitive public masses
exclusively through the use of the “Social Electricity Bill”, which reduces the
burden for people of low income, etc.
