Former EU commissioner Meglena Kuneva's party Bulgaria for the Citizens Movement has called for a boycott of the forthcoming referendum on the future of nuclear power industry in the country, which is scheduled for January 27.

A boycott is the only active stance that can be taken, Proshko Proshkov, member of the party's national council, told a news conference, as quoted by the Bulgarian News Agency, BTA.

After so much money was spent on the now abandoned Belene project, the government has no right to ask the people whether another nuclear power plant should be built, Proshkov added.

If the government wanted to have the Belene plant built, it would have been a fact by now, Proshkov said. In his views, Bulgarians are poorly informed about the issue and do not understand what they are being asked to vote on.
