Greece's net power consumption in February dropped by 12% to 3.84 million megawatt hours (MWh) as a result of mild temperatures, which reduced heating needs across the country, Reuters reported.

This is the steepest drop since comparable records began in August 2004.

Power consumption of Greek industrial users fell by 4.4% in February, while in the same time the mild winter allowed local households to cut their heating bills through lower use of air-conditioning units.

Electricity demand in the Mediterranean country has been falling for four consecutive years.

Greece's electricity system is dominated by state-run utility Public Power Corp, which produces about two-thirds of the country's total electricity output and is Greece's sole power retailer. Due to heavy rainfall in recent weeks, the company managed to boost its hydro power output to 708,651 MWh last month, its highest level in three years.
