At the most opportune moment for the outcome of EU’s “Southern Corridor” IENE is organizing the “7th South East Europe Energy Dialogue” on June 19 – 20, 2013, in Thessaloniki. A significant part of the 7th SEEED’s agenda is devoted to the latest developments concerning the Southern Corridor, while a decision on the selection of the pipeline to transfer natural gas from the Azeri “Shah Deniz II” field to Europe is imminent.

During the Dialogue meeting, Dr. Michael Thomadakis,Member of the Greece’s Regulatory Energy Authority (RAE) and Mr. Shkelqim Bozgo, Commissioner of the Albanian Energy Regulator (ERE) will jointly present the approval, by both Authorities, of the “Final Joint Opinion of the Energy Regulators on TAP AG's Exemption Application”, in compliance with the respective EU directive. TAP is one of the two rival pipeline projects – the other one being West Nabucco – to be selected by the “Shah Deniz II” consortium. The TAP pipeline is designed to transfer Azeri natural gas via Greece, Albania and Italy.

The aforementioned presentation by Dr. Thomadakis and Mr. Bozgo will take place on Thursday, June 20th, during 7th SEEED session on «A New Era for Natural Gas in SE Europe». The session will be attended by representatives of regulatory authorities, executives of public and private natural gas companies of the region and the EU etc. and will be followed by a panel discussion on the prospects of a regional gas market.

The latest developments of the evolving natural gas and electricity markets of the region, as well as the ever deepening energy partnerships of S.E. European countries with the Caspian Sea, the East Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa constitute the general background of the current regional energy debate. In addition, the present difficult economic situation facing most European countries and the implications to security of energy supply and the global concern for the provision of viable alternatives, will be discussed at the 7th SEEED.

More specifically, “The New Regional Parameters” of the energy agenda of SE Europe is the focus of this year’s “Energy Dialogue”, which has been conceived as a forum for furthering the idea of a S.E. European energy bridge involving all the countries of the region, with the objective of exchanging information and ideas, networking and discussing the shaping of the political action required in order to face the increased global and regional energy and environmental challenges.

The subjects to be covered in this year’s SEEED will cover: expanding the gas infrastructure in SE Europe, gas market integration in S.E. Europe, electricity market operation and competition, electricity infrastructure projects, the expanding role of RES in the context of the regional electricity market, oil and gas (upstream and midstream), energy efficiency in the building sector and its role in demand-side management, environmental constraints and the climate change agenda, energy investment prospects and business opportunities, energy security and geopolitical issues.
