In view of the current debate on European energy
market integration and latest global energy developments, IENE in cooperation
with the Romania Energy Centre (ROEC) is convening a one day conference in
Bucharest, Romania on May 6, 2015 to discuss “The Nuclear Option for SE Europe”
in the context of energy security and EU’s goal for an Energy Union.
This
conference which follows the increased regional outreach by both IENE and ROEC
will discuss the challenges and opportunities for nuclear power generation in
SE Europe. The organisers expect that this conference, upon its conclusion, will
constitute a major reference point for the entire S.E. European nuclear energy
market.
In the developing and energy hungry region of SE Europe, nuclear
energy can play an important role contributing to a balanced regional energy
mix. Nuclear energy experts from various countries including Romania, Bulgaria,
Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria and Turkey will participate and share their
views and insight. Furthermore, senior government officials, E.U.
representatives and executives from major energy companies and international
organisations are expected to attend.
The conference will provide an ideal
opportunity for all players involved in the energy sector to assess the
prospects for nuclear power development in the region taking into consideration
the broader social, economic and climate change aspects.
This IENE/ROEC
conference on the 'Nuclear Option for S.E Europe' will further try to address a
number of controversial issues related to nuclear power generation, including
the management and safe storage of radioactive waste, operational safety issues
and the environmental impact from the construction and operation of nuclear
power facilities. Through this unique regional event IENE and ROEC will attempt
to initiate a much needed cross border debate on the role and contribution of
nuclear power generation in addressing the region's long term energy challenges
