Romania's energy output roseby an annual 4.9% in the first quarter of the year, while imports increased by 4.5%, the statistics office, INS, said on Tuesday.

Romania's energy production totalled 5.71 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) throughMarchandimports rose to2.58 million TOE, INS said in a statement.

A TOE is the rounded-off amount of energy that would be produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.

Romania's electricity output and imports totalled 17.2 billion KWhinthe first quarter, up 5.1% on the year.

The Romanian thermal power plants' production fellby 12.6% to some 7billion KWh through March.The hydroelectric power stations' output jumped35.5% to 4.9 billion KWh. The production of the country's sole nuclear power plant fell1.8% to some 3billion KWh and the output of wind farms was 1.8billion KWh, up by 408.3 million KWh from a year earlier. Solar plants produced 264.2 million KWh, up by 100.7 million KWh compared to the same period of 2014.

Final electricity consumptionfell by an annual 3.6% to 12.5 billion KWh.

Romania’s electricity exports rose by 94.7%to 2.6 billion KWh in the period under review, INS said.
