The EU is continuing to prepare for the increasingly likely prospect that Brussels will not be able to work out a deal with the United Kingdom about their future relations once Brexit becomes a reality in early 2019.

Both parties’ scepticism about the prospect of a Brexit deal hit new highs after the latest attempt to bridge the gap between the two failed at the weekend despite a concerted effort on Sunday by the respective negotiating teams

“We continue to work hard for an agreement, but our work of preparations and contingencies continues and intensifies, ” said the EU’s Chief Spokesman Margaritis Schinas during the daily press briefing of the EU executive. Brussels’ chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, previously reiterated that “key points remained unresolved”.

No further negotiations are expected by before a dinner between the heads of state and government in Brussels.
