Romanian hydro power producer Hidroelectrica said on Thursday it has invested 1.98 million lei ($0.48 million/ 0.41 million euro) in the modernisation of its Jidoaia hydro power plant (HPP) in central Romania

Following the investment, the 110kV station has entered a new lifecycle, Hidroelectrica said in a press release.

"We are glad that, in addition to the traditional contractors, our tenders have started to attract more and more new companies. As we find that there is additional capacity in the market, we intend to increase the number of upgrades and accelerate the pace of investments," Bogdan Badea, president of the management board of Hidroelectrica, said.

Jidoaia Pumping Station is located in the Lotrului Mountains, on the course of the Jidoaia stream. The Jidoaia Hydropower Development aims to capture the waters coming from the Jidoaia stream and from the 16 secondary catchments from the northern pumping branch, in the Jidoaia accumulation lake.

Hidroelectrica is 80.06% owned by the Romanian state, while investment fund Fondul Proprietatea owns 19.94%. The company has in its portfolio 209 hydro power plants with a total installed capacity of 6,482 MW.

Earlier this month, Hidroelectrica said that it plans to bid for an 108 MW wind farm located in Constanta county currently owned by German energy group STEAG, as part of a strategy to diversify its portfolio by acquiring other renewable energy production capacities.
