Poland will attempt to negotiate with the European Union a higher carbon dioxide emissions quota for 2008-12, the daily Parkiet reports.

In 2007, the E.U. cut a quota requested by Poland by 27%. Given Poland's almost complete dependence on coal as fuel for power generation it is expected that electricity prices will rise substantially as companies have to buy CO2 on the market.

The daily said Poland would ask the European Commission to increase its CO2 cap for 2008-12 in exchange for larger emissions reductions in the period after 2012.
