Eni SpA (E), Italy's biggest oil and natural gas company, will carry out maintenance at four of its refineries in Italy this year and plans to upgrade one plant in 2009, the company said Friday.

The 70,000 barrel a day Venice refinery will undergo a full shutdown, said Angelo Caridi, Eni's chief operating officer of refining and marketing during the company's fourth-quarter results.

Partial maintenance is also scheduled for the 110,000 barrel a day Taranto facility, the 100,000 barrel a day Gela plant and the 80,000 barrel a day Milazzo refinery.

Caridi didn't provide the dates for the maintenance.

The company also plans to upgrade its Sannazzaro refinery in 2009, Caridi said.
