Russia's tax authorities have claimed 6 billion rubles ($256 million) in back taxes on TNK-BP (TNBP.RS), BP PLC's (BP) Russian joint venture, for the 2004-05 tax period, the Vedomosti daily reported Wednesday, citing an unnamed source close to the company.

The claims, which were confirmed by company officials, includes value-added, land and mineral extraction taxes from several of TNK-BP's subsidiaries. The claim had already been calculated into the company's financial results for 2007, officials told Vedomosti.

Last September TNK-BP told investors it was awaiting a tax probe for the period 2004-05, while at the same time being in a dispute over a $419 million back tax claim from 2001. The outcome of that claim remains undisclosed, Vedomosti said.
