The U.N. atomic watchdog's deputy director general, Olli Heinonen, will visit Tehran Thursday to discuss Iran's suspect nuclear program, an International Atomic Energy Agency spokesman told AFP.

The spokesman declined to say what the talks would be about.

Negotiators from the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Russia and China are to confer by telephone Wednesday on whether to seek new sanctions or keep talking to Iran after its response to their offer to resolve the dispute.

A diplomat close to the Vienna-based IAEA said Heinonen's visit wasn't directly connected with this, but was likely to concentrate on clarifying outstanding questions the IAEA has about Tehran's disputed nuclear drive.
