French energy giant GDF Suez (GSZ.FR) would be prepared to look favorably on an OPEC-style organization for gas exporting countries if it is a forum for dialogue, but not if it is just a cartel, Chief Executive Gerard Mestrallet said Wednesday.

Iran, Qatar and Russia have agreed to form such an organization, the Islamic Republic's oil minister said Tuesday after a trilateral meeting in Tehran.

If the pact is a matter of "cartel logic" then it's "not desirable," Mestrallet told delegates and reporters at an international gas summit.

But if it is a "perspective of a forum of dialogue likely to improve visibility and transparency on prices" and with a "long-term vision" then GDF Suez is ready to look at it favorably, Mestrallet said.
