Croatia has set up a working group to develop nuclear energy legislation and consider potential locations for nuclear power capacities, the economy ministry said

"Our nuclear agenda is aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and ensuring the long-term energy independence of Croatia," economy minister Ante Susnjar said in a press release on Tuesday. The working group for nuclear energy brings together representatives of the ministry, other state institutions, universities and the energy sector.

Among the main tasks of the working group will be the development of a legislative framework for the use of nuclear energy as one of the low-carbon solutions, the creation of prerequisites to set up an independent regulatory body for nuclear energy, and participation in the development and analysis of energy solutions that include the nuclear option.

The working group will also work on the preparation of studies on potential locations for the development of nuclear capacities, either in the form of classic nuclear power plants or small modular reactors (SMR).

The participants in the meeting for establishing the working group have agreed that SMRs are one of the key solutions for the development of future nuclear energy capacities, as this type of technology enables a more flexible, safer and faster implementation of nuclear power solutions in national energy systems, with stricter safety standards and a decentralized approach to electricity supply, as per the press release. The working group will consider the financial and economic aspects of the SMR technology in comparison with classic large nuclear power plants, in order to make the best decisions for Croatia.

For more than 40 years Croatia has been co-owner of the Krsko nuclear power plant, which is located on neighbouring Slovenia and meets 16% of Croatia’s energy needs.
