The MoU, in effect for ten years, commits DESFA and Nomagas to advancing sustainable, secure, and efficient natural gas infrastructure, fostering cross-border synergies, and supporting the integration of emerging technologies to enhance regional energy security and drive the energy transition, DESFA said in a press release.
"This Memorandum of Understanding highlights Nomagas’ role in diversifying North Macedonia’s energy supply and supporting its energy transition. It also establishes Nomagas as a key link for transporting natural gas and hydrogen to the Western Balkans and Europe, helping to strengthen their energy systems," Muhamet Elmazi, executive director of Nomagas, said.
The partnership will support the development of national gas systems in North Macedonia and Greece, enhance energy diversification and security in Southeastern Europe, and promote sustainable infrastructure in the region, DESFA CEO Maria Rita Galli said.
In 2021, the governments of North Macedonia and Greece signed an agreement to construct a cross-border natural gas interconnector. The latest tender for the project, valued at 83.7 million euro ($95.2 million), attracted five potential investors, according to local media reports.
