Ukraine Monday vowed to pay off a debt for gas to Russia following threats by the Russian energy giant OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) to halt deliveries, the government said.

Ukraine's state gas company Naftogaz "will honour its debt to Gazprom", said the firm's chief Oleg Dubina in a meeting with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, the government's press service said.

"We will go to Moscow to find ways to solve this problem. I think that these questions will be resolved," he added.

Gazprom warned Saturday it would cut off gas deliveries to Ukraine on Jan. 1 unless a new contract is signed, in a move that would risk a repeat of 2006's interruptions to gas supplies to Europe.
