A debate between Russia and Ukraine about Russian gas imports to Ukraine won't affect Russian gas supply to Hungary and elsewhere in Europe, Russian gas giant OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) told Hungarian national daily Nepszabadsag over the weekend.

A separate transit agreement applies to gas supply to Hungary and elsewhere in Europe, Gazprom said. Last week the daily quoted Gazprom spokesman Sergej Kupriyanov as saying Russian gas imports to Hungary may come to a halt in January unless Russia and Ukraine agree on pricing.

In 2006, Hungary saw a big drop in its Russian gas supplies when Moscow turned off the tap in the midst of a similar standoff with Ukraine. Some 80% of Hungary's natural gas exports come from Russia through Ukraine.
