Hungary's natural gas transit and system operator Foldgazszallito Zrt. had ordered large industrial consumers of gas to switch to alternative fuels after gas imports from Russia through Ukraine came to a complete stop Tuesday afternoon, the company said Wednesday.

As of 0700 GMT Wednesday, Foldgazszallito ordered industrial gas consumers using between 500 and 2,500 cubic meters of gas an hour to switch to alternative fuels.

The company had ordered at 1930 GMT Tuesday industrial, trade and agricultural companies that consume 2,500 cubic meters of gas an hour or more - and have the means without affecting their operations - to switch to alternative fuels.

The measures don't affect residential and public consumers.
