BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AFP)--The Kyrgyz parliament won't vote before March on a government-approved plan to close a U.S. airbase on its soil that serves as a vital supply route to Afghanistan, a spokesman said Tuesday.

"The Kyrgyz parliament will examine the question about the closure of the airbase no earlier than March," said parliament spokesman Emil Niyazov.

He said that parliament wanted to wait for the outcome of discussions between the U.S. and Russia over the base's future. A parliamentary vote has been expected to take place Thursday.

The Kyrgyz government last week announced it had decided to close the base but the U.S. has said it has still not received official notification from Bishkek that it is to be shut down
