The European Commissioners for Energy and Environment will meet on July 14 with representatives of the oil and gas industry, as well as national surveillance authorities, to discuss the possible need to review European rules about platform drilling, in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico accident.

"I wish to make sure that the necessary legislation is in place and effectively implemented and that, at the same time, all possible efforts are made by the industry to avoid a similar accident and consequent oil spill," Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said in a statement. This will be the second meeting with the industry.

The European Commission, the European Union's executive body, is analyzing existing legislation to see if it needs to be strengthened to prevent an accident like the recent one in the
Gulf of Mexico .

After such analysis, Oettinger may come up with a proposal for new rules in the fall, the commission said.
