Nigeria has urged the China Machinery and Equipment Company, or CMEC, to explore the large coal deposits in the country for power generation, the News Agency of Nigeria said in a report Friday.

Vice President Namadi Sambo, speaking while receiving the company's management in
Abuja , the Nigerian capital, Thursday, said the government would partner with CMEC to solve the nation's power problem.

The report quoted Sambo as saying that
Nigeria has large deposits of coal in its southern state of Enugu and northern Benue , Kogi and Nasawara states.

Sambo said a German company was exploring the coal deposit in
Nigeria 's northern Gombe with a veiw to building of a coal-powered plant.

Nigeria can't generate enough electricity for its population of about 150 million and is seeking assistance from the U.S. , Asian and European companies to help meet the demand.
