Tanzania has asked East African countries to start developing nuclear power, the Daily Nation newspaper reports Thursday.

Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission Director General Iddi Mkilaha is cited as saying balancing energy needs and supply can't be met by conventional power or renewable sources such as wind and solar.

"Coal and natural gas are sustainable in a limited time span but long term solution to energy deficit can only be met by nuclear energy," the daily quotes Mkilaha as having said at an East African Power Industry Convention in Nairobi.

Australia-based Mantra Resources Ltd. (MRU.AU) is expected to start mining uranium by 2012 at Namtumbo in the southern part of
Tanzania , the daily says.
