Spanish electricity company Iberdrola SA (IBE.MC) Monday said third-quarter electricity output rose 2% to 35,367 gigawatt-hours, amid a surge in hydroelectric and coal-fired power production.

Hydroelectric power rose 64% on the year, following heavy rains in
Spain earlier in the year that replenished hydroelectric reservoirs.

The company's power output from coal-fired plants also rose, by 24%, while nuclear power and renewables production both rose 17% in the third quarter from a year earlier.

At the end of the third quarter, Iberdrola had an installed capacity of 44.46 gigawatts, 0.7% higher than a year earlier. The company's capacity to produce electricity from fuel oil fell, while its renewable power output rose.

Iberdrola, based in
Bilbao , northern Spain , is the world's biggest wind-power generator.
