The consortium behind the proposed South Stream gas pipeline connecting Russia and southern Europe is in partnership talks with German companies, said South Stream Chief Executive Marcel Kramer Wednesday.

Kramer wouldn't name any of the companies involved in talks, but said the consortium would welcome a strong new partner.

One of the South Stream partners,
Italy 's Eni SpA (E), said earlier this month Wintershall, a subsidiary of German industrial giant SE (BAS.XE), was interested in joining the project.

South Stream is a joint venture between
Eni , Russia 's OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) and Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR).
