Electricite de France SA's (EDF.FR) U.K. subsidiary EDF Energy Tuesday pledged to keep standard gas and electricity prices for residential customers at their current levels until at least the start of March 2011.

Energy consumption is typically at its highest in winter, with average gas use in the coldest months of December and January more than six times higher than in July and August, EDF said.

"We know these are difficult times. With people using over six times more gas in winter than in summer, any help we can provide at this time of year goes a long way," said EDF Energy's director of residential customers Jim Poole.

More than 90% of EDF Energy's 5.5 million customers are on standard tariff prices.

At the end of October
Britain 's second-largest energy supplier Scottish and Southern Energy PLC (SSE.LN) said it will raise prices for household gas tariffs by 9.4% from Dec. 1, citing higher forward annual wholesale gas prices.
