China 's northwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region plans to build 10 coal-fired power plants with a combined installed power generation capacity of 6.6 gigawatts, putting its coal resources to work to meet power demand in central and eastern China , the state-run China News Service reported Sunday.

The National Energy Administration of the National Development and Reform Commission has approved the start of initial work on the 10 plants, the agency said, citing the NDRC's local branch.

Initial work on an 800-kilovolt ultra-high voltage power transmission line, linking Hami of Xinjiang and Zhengzhou of Henan province, will start soon after the NEA receives a feasibility report from the State Grid Corp. of
China , it said.

China 's major power plant operators, including China Huadian Corp., China Huaneng Group and China Guodian Corp., are involved in the 10 planned projects, the news service said.
