Iraq committed to supply natural gas to the European Union in the long term as part of an agreement signed with the European Commission, but no export volumes were mentioned, the EU's executive said Friday.

Iraq is one of the potential sources of gas on which the EU is focusing to diversify its supplies away from Russia and open a direct pipeline link to the Caspian and the Middle East , called Southern Corridor.

According to the deal, signed Thursday night by Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq Hussain al-Shahristani and European Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger, the commission and the Iraqi government will "jointly identify the export gas volumes to the world market, including through the Southern gas corridor to the EU."
