French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Tuesday Germany's recent decision to quit nuclear power generation will have important repercussions, and restated France 's bipartisan choice in favor of atomic power.

"The decision will have heavy consequences in the short term because
Germany , despite the increase in renewable energy output, will have to increase its power imports and its carbon emissions," Fillon said, in answer to a question in the National Assembly.

Fillon pointed to a consensual choice in favor of nuclear energy made in France three decades ago, which has allowed the nation to achieve power independence, low electricity prices and contain its carbon emissions.

Fillon repeated the government's commitment to shut all nuclear power plants that fail the stress tests the government has scheduled for later this year.
