Iran is proposing to host an emergency meeting in the coming three months as a way to reassess the market, an Iranian oil official said Wednesday.

The official, who was speaking as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries is currently meeting Vienna to discuss whether to boost oil output, said "it was planned" Iran would discuss the proposal at the gathering.

"Sometimes you need to do an extraordinary meeting to reassess the market," he said.

Rising concerns that global economic growth will falter--together with oil demand--have deepened the traditional divides between various OPEC members.

Iran has long opposed any change in output--the main topic currently being discussed at the meeting.

But the country's interim oil minister Mohammad Aliabadi took a softer stance before the meeting, saying it was up to the group to decide.
