The coming winter is likely to see a much sharper-than-usual fall in U.K. natural gas production due to the decline of existing fields and a low number of new resources coming onstream, U.K. utility National Grid PLC (NGG) said Wednesday.

The maximum potential supply National Grid expects to U.K. offshore gas fields to be capable of this coming winter is 153 million cubic meters a day, compared with 184 million last winter, the utility said in its regular Winter Consultation Report.

"This represents a 17% decline against the equivalent forecast for winter 2010-2011," the report said. "In previous years reported declines have been typically between 5% and 10%."
