Bahrain plans to shortly start drilling deeper in the Bahrain Field as it seeks to discover additional quantities of natural gas there, state-run Kuwait News Agency, or Kuna, reports Thursday citing Bahraini Energy Minister Abdul Hussain Mirza.

The drilling will be carried out through agreements with some international companies and the decision to drill at greater depths follows a proposal by a consultancy firm to drill deeper than existing 16,000-foot wells, he said.

The country's average daily production of natural gas is about 1.3 million cubic feet a day but the gas production capacity of the Bahrain Field will increase beyond current levels, Mirza told the news agency.

Boosting production is part of a development and production sharing agreement signed between
Bahrain 's National Oil and Gas Authority, U.S.-based Occidental Petroleum Corp. (OXY) and the United Arab Emirates ' Mubadala Development Co., he told Kuna.
