Oil production at Rumaila , Iraq 's largest oil field, has been affected by a fire at a neighboring gas compression facility, operator BP PLC (BP) said Tuesday.

The facility isn't part of the Rumaila complex, but receives natural gas from the field, a BP spokesman said.

The BP-led joint venture that operates the field, "had to stop feeding gas into that plant. That has had an impact on production," he said, without providing further details.

In March this year,
Iraq 's Oil Ministry said oil production at Rumaila was 1.275 million barrels a day, an increase of 20% since the BP-led venture began to redevelop the field.

"We don't believe any of our staff or contractors were involved in the incident," but the BP-led Rumaila Operating Organization is providing help to Iraq's Southern Gas Company, which operates the gas compressor, he said.
