The European Union expressed "very great concern" about U.S. allegations that Iran was behind an attempt to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington and warned of "serious" implications if the charges are proven.

Maja Kocijancic, a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, said the EU was in touch with U.S. authorities over the allegations, which she said would represent a "major breach of international law."

"We are closely following the situation," she said, adding that if Iran is found to have sponsored the assassination attempt, it would have "serious international implications."

Separately Wednesday, the EU blacklisted 29 more Iranian officials because of human rights abuses in the country.
