GDF Suez SA (GSZ.FR) said Wednesday it is considering an acquisition of the natural gas transmission grid that German competitor E.ON AG (EOAN.XE) has put on the block, the French energy giant's chief executive said Wednesday.

"We have formed a consortium to look at the possibility to acquire the gas transport business of E.ON," said Gerard Mestrallet on the sidelines of an energy conference in
Berlin .

He declined to name the company's consortium partners, however.

People familiar with the matter have previously said that E.ON has initiated the sale of its unit Open Grid Europe, asking potential buyers to register interest in the assets at the end of this week.

The E.ON unit is valued at around EUR2.5 billion, the people have said, adding that the asset could attract interest from strategic and financial investors.
