Petroplus Holdings AG's (PPHN.EB) Coryton refinery in Essex , southeast England , has enough crude oil only for a few days of production, said Richard Howitt, the member of the European parliament for the East of England.

The refinery is continuing to operate, even as administrators of the U.K. subsidiaries of stricken Swiss-based refiner Petroplus were appointed earlier Tuesday, said the U.K. government and trade union Unite.

However, shipments of refined products from Coryton have been halted.

The Coryton refinery wasn't immediately available to comment.

The facility has a total refining capacity of 220,000 barrels a day and employs 850 people, according to administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers.
