U.K. emissions of carbon dioxide fell to just 456 million metric tons last year, their lowest levels since records began more than 40 years ago, according to Department of Energy and Climate Change, reported the Financial Times Thursday.

According to the data, one of the biggest reasons for the fall was greater use of nuclear power, coupled with a warmer winter in 2011.

The paper also said 2011's fall was especially sharp, even though de-industrialisation and a move to natural gas and away from coal has caused a steady downward trend in the greenhouse gas emissions since records began in 1970.

The figures also confirmed that the
U.K. 's carbon emissions have been cut by over 23% since 1990.
