Danish Vestas Wind Systems A/S, the world's largest manufacturer of wind turbines, said Thursday it has been awarded a contract for the delivery of wind turbines with a electricity output capacity of 216 megawatt for a Belgian wind farm project.

Belgian renewable energy project developer Northwind NV has placed a firm and unconditional order for a total of 72 V112-3.0 MW wind turbines for its Northwind offshore wind farm, Vestas said in a statement.

The company had already confirmed the order back in January, but said at the time it still had status as conditional and needed to be finally fixed before it could be formally announced.

The contract is a so-called supply- and installation contract and includes a 15-year service and maintenance deal, Vestas said.

Delivery is scheduled for the second quarter of 2013, and the project is expected to start production in the second quarter of 2014.

With the new order, Vestas' total volume of orders booked so far this year reached 1,973 megawatt, it said.
