BP PLC (BP, BP.LN) has paid a $5.2 million fine for submitting false or misleading reports on energy production on Colorado tribal lands, the Interior Department said Wednesday.

The fine resulted from audits conducted by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, which found BP paid lower royalty rates on energy production on tribal lands.

The fines were initially issued in 2010. BP requested a hearing on the civil penalty, but then decided to pay the penalty instead, the Interior Department said.
