German Economics Minister Philipp Roesler called on China to open its markets further to European companies.

Mr. Roesler arrived with Chancellor Angela Merkel in
China Thursday, along with a string of German business leaders, to strengthen economic ties. In a statement from Beijing , Mr. Roessler said, "the European market is open to Chinese companies. We expect the same access to the Chinese market for our companies."

German and Chinese companies should be treated equally, he said. "I am confident we can expand our economic cooperation." The two countries signed memoranda to expand cooperation in energy, environmental technology and biotechnology, the ministry said.
