Electricity demand in Dubai , the Gulf financial hub, increased 3.8% in the second quarter of 2012 on year, while production rose 3% during the same period, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, or DEWA, said Monday.

Peak demand for electricity reached a total of 6,165 megawatts in the second quarter up from 5,941 megawatt a year ago, while production reached 9,605 gigawatt/hours compared with 9,329 gigawatt/hours during the same period, DEWA said in an emailed statement.

DEWA didn't give a reason for the rise in demand but said its focus is "to continue improving our production, distribution, and transmission capacity to strengthen the infrastructure and meet the growing demand of all sectors on electricity and water."
