Romanian energy output decreased 2% on the year to 13.32 million metric tons of oil equivalent in the first seven months, on falling production in the hydropower and nuclear sectors, news agency Mediafax said citing official data Friday.

Hydropower output declined 19.8% on the year to 8.53 billion kilowatt-hours, while nuclear energy production was down 4% to 6.4 billion KWh, the statistics institute INS said.

Romania 's top hydropower generator Hidroelectrica last month activated its force majeure clause on electricity deliveries for the second time in less than a year, due to a prolonged drought. The company filed for insolvency earlier this year and began a reorganization program.

Thermal power production rose 8.1% on the year to 19.8 billion KWh in January through July, while wind farm production more than doubled to 1.37 billion KWh, from 633.3 million KWh in the same period of 2011.

The country's primary energy resources fell 3.5% on the year to 19.84 million tons of oil equivalent in the first seven months, the data showed.

On the other hand, electric energy resources inched up 0.2% to 36.7 billion KWh, largely fueled by a 71.8% increase in imports.

Romanian final power consumption reached 32.04 billion KWh in January through July, up 4.5% from the same period of 2011.
