Greek power workers Friday announced plans to begin rolling 48-hour strikes as early as next week to protest the new austerity measures the government is demanding from its increasingly restive population.

In the past such strikes have led to rotating power cuts across the country.

The announcement by the powerful Genop-Dei labor union, which represents workers with the state-owned Public Power Corporation SA (PPC.AT), came a day after coalition leaders reached agreement on 13.5 billion euros ($17.4 billion) in new spending cuts and tax increases.

The government must now win approval from its international creditors and a fragmented parliament while keeping the peace in a country where protests against austerity have turned violent in recent days.

The union said the strikes would be timed to coincide with the debate in parliament and could start as early as Monday if the government submits the measures to lawmakers next week.
